Severe Pediatric Enterovirus 71 Infection Investigated in Hong Kong

Hong Kong health officials are investigating on a severe pediatric enterovirus 71 and an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) at a secondary school in Eastern District. 

The patient is a 13 year old boy with good past health. He had symptoms of HFMD such as fever, sore throat, headache, stiff neck and rash since 7 November 2015. Apart from the patient, 12 other students aged 13 to 14, were infected with HFMD. 

As of 7 November 2015, there were 736 HFMD cases reported in 2015. This was an increase from 327 cases reported in the same period in 2014.
